The Homer Marine Trades Committee was founded in 1994
to represent and promote the marine businesses of Homer. Its efforts have helped restructure policies and legislation to
support the economic base of the community. Each year, the committee has
sponsored a family-oriented event formerly known as the SeaFair, with the objective of honoring the commercial fishing and boating industries while entertaining and educating families about cold-water safety and immersion. With the US Coast Guard as a major contributor,
the re-named Safety Fair expertly supports the K-Bay SeaFest by promoting safe boating practices, cold-water safety, and fun on the Bay.
Homer is proud to be the home port for both the
110' patrol boat USCGC ROANOKE ISLAND, and the 225' buoy tender USCGC
HICKORY. These two ships and their hardworking crews are charged with many
missions spanning from search and rescue tasks and aids to navigation, to
fisheries patrols and Homeland Security assignments.
The USCG Marine Safety Detachment Kenai also
operates in central and southern Cook Inlet. Their mission includes U.S.
merchant and passenger boat inspections, marine environmental protection and
pollution response, commercial fishing vessel safety, merchant mariner and
vessel casualty investigations, port safety and security, and community outreach
and education.
The US Coast Guard Auxiliary District Seventeen
Homer Flotilla operates safety and regatta patrols and is an integral part of
the Coast Guard Search and Rescue team. In addition, they perform harbor and
pollution patrols, offer free vessel safety checks to recreational boaters, and
teach boating safety courses.
