Reflections of Life on Kachemak Bay 
Ptarmigan Arts Back Room Gallery

For the month of May, Ptarmigan Arts will be hosting an exhibit titled "Reflections of Life on Kachemak Bay", an invitational mixed media show presenting the multiple talents of local artists. In conjunction with the themes and activities surrounding the Shorebird Festival and SeaFest, the theme of this exhibit will encompass the variety of life found in, on, under and around Kachemak Bay, including animal, human, sport and recreational life. Sea Chanteys and Tall Tales   Salty Dawg Saloon

A longstanding annual tradition! Local musicians perform nautical numbers and lead the Salty Dawg patrons in sea chanteys. All mariners are invited to step up and tell their tales of adventure and woe on the high seas -- exaggeration and embellishment naturally expected and permitted.

The feature documentary chronicles the scenic trip of Josh and J.J., two intrepid adventures as they paddle handmade pygmy kayaks from Seward, Alaska to Seattle, Washington. Come along to join the adventure and reignite your passion for kayaking and wooden boats! Gets hands on practice plugging and patching under simulated conditions as the US Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachment Kenai trains you on how to keep your boat from sinking. You might get a little wet, but what you learn will likely keep you dry in the long run.

Training from the experts for those new to survival suit use or needing a refresher session. Lean proper inspection and care of the suits, how to don them correctly, and how to enter and move in the water.

Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak flies their helicopter in to perform a simulated rescue of a victim in the water. An exciting display that is certain to make a real impression on the whole family. Get a rare close-up look at the helicopter after the show.

Come checkout the Backwoods Girls competing to be an entrant in the big competition at the Kenai Peninsula State Fair! This is part of the AK 50 Celebration brought to you by the Kenai Peninsula Borough and the Kenai Peninsula Fair. These ladies will stack firewood, pack water, fry eggs, start a fire and tend a baby. Ladies, would you like to see if you have what it takes to be an Alaskan Homesteader in the competition? Oyster Slurp Contest   Barge Basin
Sunday  2pm-3pm   $5 Entry fee
Contestants compete with their hands behind their backs in several heats of oyster eating, vying for prizes and the title of Fastest Oyster Slurper of Kachemak Bay for 2009.

Kayaking Classes

Alaska Kayak School's 4th Immersion Sea Kayaking Skills Symposium Friday May 22 through Tuesday May 26. Headquarters: Homer Spit Barge Basin. All kayaking classes have pre-requisites. Please follow links on the Kayaking Classes page for full details.

Develop your sea kayaking skills while wearing immersion wear and under the guidance of Alaska Kayak School instructors and coaches. Take the courses one at a time or line up for five solid days of sea kayak training for the package deal.

Introduction to Sea Kayaking: Force 2    Barge Basin
Friday-Sunday  8:30am-5pm
Learn and practice fundamental skills and rescues for sea kayaking. This is the class to take if you have not perfected the skill of capsizing while retaining your kayak and paddle, OR if you have not had instruction in sea kayaking skills before. Prerequisites: Wiling to capsize, can follow verbal instruction and can swim.

Fundamentals Tuning: Force 4      Barge Basin
Friday  8:30am-5pm
Examine the details of the fundamental skills and break down your sea kayaking skills into component parts to explore the limits of body actions, blade awareness and sea kayak performance. Intended for experienced paddlers, to coach the details of your basic skills. Prerequisites: Previous sea kayaking instruction and a confident, competent and relaxed wet exit into cold water.

Skill Refinement with Rescues: Force 2    Barge Basin
Saturday  8:30am-5pm
Refine your wet exit and start to explore the technical details of the fundamental skills. Add a few important skills to your paddler's toolbox, with introduction to rescues and towing. Prerequisites: Fundamental skills or Introduction to Sea Kayaking course, especially a confident and competent wet exit.

Skill Refinement with Rescues: Force 4     Barge Basin
Saturday  8:30am-5pm
Explore the limits of all flat-water skills and maneuvers with an emphasis on fine-tuning and focus on details. Includes rescues and towing in protected water. Prerequisites: Strong beginner or intermediate skills or Fundamentals Tuning.

Rescue and Open Water: Force 2   Barge Basin
Sunday  8:30am-5pm
A short trip planning primer, then learn to rig your sea kayak for open water paddling. Learn and practice increased group awareness, and develop the skills to paddle in wind and waves. Practice rescues in open water or in low wind conditions and small waves. Details on rescues and towing. Prerequisites: Second or third day of sea kayaking skills instruction, or have just taken Introductory Skills, Skill Refinement Force 2.

Rescue and Moving Water: Force 4   Meet at Mako's Water Taxi
Sunday  8:30am-5pm   
Learn to maneuver a sea kayak in fast tidal streams, and practice rescues in fast moving water. Various towing scenarios and rescue strategies are explored. Learn how to use tide and current tables to make tide predictions. Prerequisites: Experienced paddler with strong beginner or intermediate skills, or Skill Refinement with Rescues Force 4.

Rescues and Moving Water: Force 2  Meet at Mako's Water Taxi
Monday  10:00am-6:00pm
An introduction to paddling sea kayaks in moving water, and a chance to use teamwork to practice rescues in a dynamic environment with eddy lines and small whirlpools. Learn what causes tides and currents and make tidal predictions using tidal constants. Prerequisites: Have taken Introduction to Sea Kayaking recently, and MUST have a confident and well practiced wet exit.

Rescues and Open Water: Force 4  Barge Basin
Monday  8:30am-5pm
Navigation and trip planning, and practice flat-water skills, rescues and towing in open water. Focus on controlling your course in moderate winds and waves up to 1 meter in open water. Prerequisites: Rescues and Moving Water Force 4.

The Crossing, Force 2 and Force 4    Meeting place to be announced
Tuesday  8:30am-5pm   
A trip planning session, and a navigation review. Make a plan to cross Kachemak Bay as a group and plan to return to the Spit by paddling. If you only want to paddle one-way, you will need to pay for a water taxi return, which is an additional fee. This is a 4 to 5 mile crossing and it takes 45 minutes to an hour depending on where we cross. Prerequisites: Rescues and Open Water Force 2 or Force 4, or permission. No novices or beginners.

The Ultimate Tour    True North Kayak Office, Homer Spit
Daily  check in by 7:30am    $199 per person
Water taxi to the Glacier Trailhead and hike a three-hour loop through old growth forest and glacial moraine to a glacial lake surrounded by mountains. Pick up is in Halibut Cove where our boat brings you past a puffin rookery, fjords and hanging glacier to our base camp on Yukon Island. Paddle around the island where you will find sea otters, eagles and sea caves. Water taxi, guide, kayak equipment, lunch and snacks included. Returns to Homer Harbor at 6pm.

Daily starting Friday  check-in by 9:30am    $135 per person Beginners to Experienced kayakers
Depart Homer on a water taxi trip across Kachemak Bay to Otter Cove. Join your guide on the beach for instructions on paddling safety, boat handling techniques and more. Paddle among the sea otters and tide pools with your guide. Round trip transportation across the bay, guide, kayaks and gear provided. Bring your own lunch and drinks. Returns to Homer Harbor at 5pm.

Day on the Bay    Mako's Water Taxi, Homer Spit
Daily  Check in by 8am   $200 per person, limit 10
Water taxi across Kachemak Bay and through the Herring Islands to Kasitsna Bay for a kayak tour guided by the folks at Across the Bay Tent and Breakfast. After your paddle, take a tour of Seldovia and return to Homer on a scenic flight with Smokey Bay Air. Lunch and all transportation included. Returns to Homer at 4:30pm.

Daily starting Friday
  custom times. Cost varies. Experienced kayakers only
Enjoy paddling in the Eldred passage, Sadie Cove and Tutka Bay area. Bring your own kayak and gear for water taxi to Otter Cove where you can kayak on your own for the day. This trip is for experienced kayakers. Kayak rentals or a cabin for an overnight stay at additional cost. Landing craft water taxi can access all destinations in Kachemak Bay State Park. Cost: $60 roundtrip water taxi to Otter Cove; kayak rentals $40 for a single, $70 for a double. Cabin $80 per night for two people. Paddle to the Stars    Meet at CACS yurt, Harbor Ramp 2

Water taxi to remote Peterson Bay for a guided natural history tour with the Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies and St. Augustine Kayak & Tours. The tour includes a half day each of hiking and kayaking. No kayaking experience necessary. Returns to Homer Harbor at 6pm.

Seldovia Natural History Tour   Rainbow Tours Office, Homer Spit
Daily starting Saturday  check-in by 10am  $50, juniors $40, seniors $45
Narrated nature tour departs from Homer Harbor at 10:30am. Includes Gull Island, Eldred Passage and 3 hours to explore Seldovia Village. Returns to Homer Harbor at 5:30pm. Maximum number: 90.

Daily starting Saturday  departs at 8am Round trip fares $45, juniors $35, seniors $40
Direct non-stop departures from Seldovia to Homer 8am and 4pm and from Homer to Seldovia at 10:30am and 6pm. 10:30am departure from Homer is the Seldovia Natural History Tour (see above).
